Special Olympics basketball season starts December 1st. Please contact volunteer@palouseymca.org if you are interested in volunteering and will be attending orientation.

About the Program

The Special Olympics program is for athletes 8+ to develop both as an athlete and as an active member of society! Volunteers get the opportunity to interact with the athletes, help them build their skills, and build friendships! There are four sports offered throughout the year:

  • Bowling: September - October
  • Basketball: November - January
  • Track and Field: March - May

Volunteers are expected to attend all weekly practices over the course of the season. Practice locations and times vary, however, they typically occur either on Saturdays or Weekday evenings. Please see our Special Olympics program page or email volunteer@palouseymca.org for up-to-date information on season practice schedules. Volunteers are also required to attend end-of-season regional tournaments and end-of-season parties. 45-hour practicums can usually be accomodated through Special Olympics volunteering.

Applying

Interested volunteers need to fill out a YMCA Special Olympics Volunteer Application. You will be prompted to complete a background check once the Y has received your application.

Volunteers will not be accepted once a season has begun, so please make sure to submit your forms before season commencement. Attendance to practices, end-of-season parties, and regional tournaments are mandatory unless prior arrangements are made.
